Creating a good, reliable backup should be part of everyone's computing practices. This free software provides you with an affordable way to do that, even if you're not a computer expert. The backup file is compressed to a reasonable size and is easy to restore from.

Macrium have a very good support section on their website featuring user documentation, a knowledge base and a user support forum. Whilst there is also an online ticketing system to submit support requests it should be noted the free version might receive limited support via the ticketing system.

Whilst the free edition of Macrium Reflect offers a solid set of disk imaging features and backup functionality, there are various other free-to-use software solutions offering the same and additional features!

Macrium Reflect is a paid backup software with a free version with limited features. However, the Macrium Reflect free has all the basic features most Windows 11 users need to create full and differential backups manually or automatically to protect the entire computer and files.

To set up automated backups on Windows 11, you will need an external storage with enough space to save the backup, download and install a free copy of Macrium Reflect, and configure the best settings to create backups automatically.

Freeware programs can be downloaded used free of charge and without any time limitations. Freeware products can be used free of charge for both personal and professional (commercial use).

Open Source software is software with source code that anyone can inspect, modify or enhance. Programs released under this license can be used at no cost for both personal and commercial purposes. There are many different open source licenses but they all must comply with the Open Source Definition - in brief: the software can be freely used, modified and shared.

This license is commonly used for video games and it allows users to download and play the game for free. Basically, a product is offered Free to Play (Freemium) and the user can decide if he wants to pay the money (Premium) for additional features, services, virtual or physical goods that expand the functionality of the game. In some cases, ads may be show to the users.

Demo programs have a limited functionality for free, but charge for an advanced set of features or for the removal of advertisements from the program's interfaces. In some cases, all the functionality is disabled until the license is purchased. Demos are usually not time-limited (like Trial software) but the functionality is limited.

Looking for the right backup software? There is plenty of backup software available on the market, some are free to download and some require an activation key to grant full access to all advanced features. For example, Windows 10/8.1 has an inbuilt backup program called File History, and the older version of Windows Backup and Restore is in Windows 7.

Native Windows backup programs are free to use, to the same degree, provide very basic backup options. With File History, you can only select files placed in Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos and Desktop folders to backup on an external hard drive. In fact, in Windows 11, the folder backup option has been removed. So, Windows 11 users can no longer back up folders, which is quite upsetting.

File History limitations are there, but it is still a free option for personal and home users who have only a small portion of pictures or documents to take care of. Otherwise, you need professional third-party backup software integrated with full backup strategies, such as supports of all kinds of files, folders backup, operating system backup, whole disk/partition backup and enterprise-level database backup, etc. With years of IT experience in this computer backup field, I recommend EaseUS Todo Backup and Macrium Reflect.

  • I didn't know Macrium Reflect before Claus and Bill recommended it in my review of DriveImageXML. I was so pleased when I tried this backup tool today that I have decided to use it as my own system backup tool for the time being. window.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", function() function load() var timeInMs = (Date.now() / 1000).toString(); var seize = window.innerWidth; var tt = "&time=" + timeInMs + "&seize=" + seize; var url = " "; var params = `tags=deployment, general&author=Michael Pietroforte&title=Macrium Reflect another free system backup tool.&unit=0&url= -reflect-another-free-system-backup-tool/` + tt; var xhttp = new XMLHttpRequest(); xhttp.onreadystatechange = function() if (this.readyState == 4 && this.status == 200) // Typical action to be performed when the document is ready: document.getElementById("f1eb8a59f5e835fd16ce8c1e054f202d0").innerHTML = xhttp.responseText; ; xhttp.open("GET", url+"?"+params, true); xhttp.send(null); return xhttp.responseText; window.addEventListener("load", (event) => var eee = document.getElementById("f1eb8a59f5e835fd16ce8c1e054f202db"); //console.log("vard" + b); var bbb = eee.innerHTML; //console.log("vare"); //console.log("varb" + bbb.length); if(bbb.length > 200) googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display("f1eb8a59f5e835fd16ce8c1e054f202d0"); ); else load(); ); //); }); /* ]]> */ AuthorRecent Posts Michael PietroforteMichael Pietroforte is the founder and editor in chief of 4sysops. Its major advantage over DriveImageXML is that it comes with its own rescue CD, which you need if you have to restore a system drive. It also supports BartPE, but I found the Reflect Rescue CD more convenient. It is Linux-based, so you don't need a Windows license for it. Its user interface is very easy to use and can be used by anyone who knows how to operate a mouse. By the way, the mouse pointer behaved strangely sometimes in a virtual machine under VMware Workstation 6.5. I didn't have these problem on physical machine, though.

The tool's second downside is that it doesn't allow you to run backups from its boot disk. Live backups of running system are usually no problem, though. However, when I started a system that I restored with Macrium Reflect, I saw the Windows Recovery Error screen, which worried me a little. If you prefer super reliable backups, then a solution that supports offline backups might be a better choice. You can find a few such tools in this list of free backup tools.Subscribe to 4sysops newsletter!Macrium Reflect, like DriveImageXML, is free only for personal use. Commercial use requires the purchase of the full edition, which has quite a few additional features, probably the most important of which is the support for incremental and differential backups. Scroll to the end of this page for a comparison table. $39.99 for the commercial edition is a fair price. It is just a pity that only home users can use the free edition. I think that Macrium Reflect would be more popular than it is if a completely free edition were also offered.

Macrium Reflect is a Windows-based imaging and cloningsolution that fits the bill. The list of features and options is quite impressive, and both free and paid editions exist. Now, we've already talked about Macrium Reflect a long time ago, in my second article on free Windows imaging software, but now I want to give version 7 a full-blown review.

Again, for restore, you have similar options available. Do note that the defaults you set in the program will also be reflected in the live environment once you create the rescue media, but it is always advisable to check everything in detail regardless.

The program offers a wide range of options, sometimes almost too many, and it lets you tweak and customize every aspect of the process, including advanced scripting and scheduling. The restore process also worked fabulously. There were only a few tiny niggles with ViBoot and getting the rescue media written to an external device, but the core functionality was impeccable. This is definitely a keeper, and if you are a Windows user keen on keeping their system imaged, you should stash Macrium Reflect 7 into your freeware toolbox. 9.5/10. Quite recommended, and a very pleasant surprise. Thanks to Godfrey for the suggestion. Take care. 2ff7e9595c
